“I have my senior year planned: keep my head down, don’t make any waves, and get the diploma. I’ve done the popularity thing at Savage River High, but after two years away, I have no interest in reclaiming my crown.
The last time I put myself in the spotlight, I was left in shambles.
Unfortunately, my carefully laid plans go to hell when I grab the attention of dark, forbidding, and brutally hot Sebastian Vega. He looks at me like he wants to kill my puppy or eat me alive. Quite possibly both.
Sebastian is everywhere I go, and he’s decided I’m the twisted game he wants to play, whether I’m a willing participant or not.
The question is…what will I have to lose in order to win?
Authors Note: This is a DARK high school bully romance with mature themes and dubious situations that some readers may find offensive. If you’re looking for a nice guy, prince of a hero, this story isn’t for you.“ – from Amazon Kindle.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and it won’t be my last!
Grace is likeable, even relatable from the off. Julia isn’t afraid to delve into the darker sides of life as a teen still in high school, along with carrying more baggage of hurt than most adults will ever have to carry in their whole lives. On the flip side, it’s incredibly refreshing that Grace’s relationship with her Mother isn’t the reason for all her teen angst, their relationship is grounded and wholesome. Despite everything they’ve been through they still have each other, and it’s awesome they have an incredibly close relationship that is functional.
Grace is far from the vulnerable girl next door, that needs saving by some knight in shining armour. Nor is she a prissy princess that needs a boy on her arm to feel validated. She’s kickass with a vulnerability that peeks out at times, coming from a place inside where she stores all the hurt from the shit she’s been through.
At times Julia takes us on a very dark path, into avenues that make for uncomfortable reading, I love though that she makes no apologies for this and states clearly at the very beginning of the book there will be dubious situations.
Sebastian Vega is another tortured soul, he’s far from a night in shining armour, he’s the stuff nightmares are made of!
The relationship between Grace & Bash (Sebastian) is a whole lot of push and pull, and fraught with an awful lot of friction, but like recognises like.
Other characters in the book, feel real not like they’ve just been an after-thought thrown in to fill in the gaps. Gabe, Helen, Preston, Carly, Nate, Elena, Bex all have their own voices helping to move the story along surrounding Grace & Bash.
The only thing for me, that could have made this book even better would have been having Sebastians POV alongside Grace’s, I feel like he has an incredible story to tell, and I would have loved to have ended up inside his head, seeing how he sees the world. Maybe Julia will grace us with a book in the future to tell Sebastian’s story.
If you’re cool with bully romance, with mature content, situations of a dubious nature, mentions of suicide and violence then this book is perfect for you! If not, just slide on by.
